چکیده

Abstract. We describe recent work due to Niall Ó Murchadha and the author (grqc/9706046, Phys. Rev. D57, 4728 (1998)) on the late time behaviour of the maximal foliation of the extended Schwarzschild geometry which results from evolving a time symmetric slice into the past and future, with time running equally fast at both spatial ends of the manifold. We study the lapse function of this foliation in the limit where proper time-at-infinity goes to +∞ or −∞ and the slices approach r = 3m/2.

Late Time Analysis for Maximal Slicing of Reissner-Nordström Puncture Evolutions

We perform an analytic late time analysis for maximal slicing of the Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. In particular, we discuss the collapse of the lapse in terms of its late time behavior at the throat and at the event horizon for the even and the puncture lapse. In the latter case we also determine the value of the lapse at the puncture. Furthermore, in the limit of late times slice s...

Late Time Behaviour of the Maximal Slicing of the Schwarzschild Black Hole

A time-symmetric Cauchy slice of the extended Schwarzschild spacetime can be evolved into a foliation of the r > 3m/2-region of the spacetime by maximal surfaces with the requirement that time runs equally fast at both spatial ends of the manifold. This paper studies the behaviour of these slices in the limit as proper time-at-infinity becomes arbitrarily large and gives an analytic expression ...

Analytical Representation of a Black Hole Puncture Solution

The “moving puncture” technique has led to dramatic advancements in the numerical simulations of binary black holes. Hannam et.al. have recently demonstrated that, for suitable gauge conditions commonly employed in moving puncture simulations, the evolution of a single black hole leads to a well-known time-independent, maximal slicing of Schwarzschild. They construct the corresponding solution ...

Equilibrium initial data for moving puncture simulations: The stationary 1+log slicing

We discuss a “stationary 1+log” slicing condition for the construction of solutions to Einstein’s constraint equations. For stationary spacetimes, these initial data give a stationary foliation when evolved with “moving puncture” gauge conditions that are often used in black hole evolutions. The resulting slicing is time-independent and agrees with the slicing generated by being dragged along a...

Currently the most popular method to evolve black-hole binaries is the “moving puncture” method. It has recently been shown that when puncture initial data for a Schwarzschild black hole are evolved using this method, the numerical slices quickly lose contact with the second asymptotically flat end, and end instead on a cylinder of finite Schwarzschild coordinate radius. These slices are statio...
